How We Got Started
Mark has been in construction for 30+ years. He has done it all, from building new houses from the foundation up, to remodeling, room additions, repairs, even mobile home "makeovers" is what we called them. He resigned from his position as a project manager for a major construction firm in St. Charles County to put his whole heart into building Tiny Homes. He is a master at construction and is known to "overbuild" for safety and longevity. He goes above and beyond the local municipalities codes for construction.
Emily has been in real estate since she graduated high school 20 years ago. She recently resigned as a residential appraiser at a local government agency after 12 years of service. She is now able to give 100 percent of her attention to Mini Mansions Tiny Homes. She has always been Mark's partner in crime when it comes to his "projects" which include the remodeling, room additions, and now our "Tiny Homes". On her days off work and evenings, she is side by side with him, mostly handing any tool he asks for, much like a doctor's assistant. "It is truly amazing at what this man can do by himself, one day he has the idea to build a tiny home, the next day the trailer is being custom built in Texas and two months later, our first tiny home was complete. There's not much grass that grows under his feet." Emily says.
Let's back up a little bit... In 2005, Mark and Emily built their dream home. A 2000 square foot ranch style home in Wentzville MO. It was everything they thought they wanted, and was everything society told them they should have. The housing market was good then, both of their careers were taking off... but then, it just wasn't. The economy crashed down on them like millions of other people. Since both of their business was real estate, their pocketbooks took a hit, a BIG one. It didn't take long for them to notice that they were working for mainly their house payment alone. "We were literally living paycheck to paycheck. We were contemplating foreclosing, or a short sale, or anything possible to get out of our $1800 per month house payment." Emily says. After 3 years of trying to sell their home, the stars finally aligned. They were able to sell their house for a little under what they owed. They had to bring $6,000 to the closing table. "Typically sellers get a check, we had to pay up to sell our house. What a huge disappointment that was, but it was worth every dime just to be able to breathe again". Emily says. They purchased a cute little farm house in St. Peters MO. An 800 square feet Mini Mansion (haha) with a house payment of $350 per month. It was everything they needed, and more importantly what they wanted. Simpler living. What a difference! This has financially freed them to insure their goal to build tiny homes, and eventually get to retire in one, on a beach somewhere.
